Comic-style face armband on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A wide band tattoo wraps around the upper arm and shows a woman's face in bold, comic-book style illustration, with dark hair and a star emblem on a headband. The linework is heavy and the dark areas are solid black, with grey tones used for the lighter skin and shading. The band has straight top and bottom edges, and the yellow fabric of a garment sits beside it against a pale background.

The bride's brother came up the lane on the morning of the wedding with the armband still tacky from the press. Mrs Okonedo had printed it herself on the old flatbed at the back of the bakery, the one with the cracked roller that left a grey shadow on every third sheet. Nobody in Halse Wick had seen a face like that before. The woman on it had dark hair falling heavy over one eye and a star pinned to a band across her brow, and she looked out at the room the way the miller looked at a bad debt.

The groom's grandmother refused it. She said a wedding needed a plain cuff of red wool, as hers had. But the boy wearing it, Tobiah, had been told his whole life to stand straight and say little, and he wanted something that looked back. So he tied it above his elbow himself, pulling the knot tight with his teeth.

At the feast the dancing started late because the fiddler had a split string. Tobiah stood by the trestles with his sleeve rolled, and his grandmother came to scold him. She stopped in front of him and looked at the band for a long time. Her own mother, she said, had once kept a school exercise book under the loom with a girl drawn in it, a girl with a star on her head who fought a wind that stole the village bells. She had never told anyone how it ended.

Then she asked him what the star was for. He said he didn't know yet. She laughed, took a pin from her collar, and fixed the band tighter on his arm. "Then you'll have to make the rest up," she said, and went to find the fiddler.
