Outlined hand gesture on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a hand making a gesture, drawn as a single black outline with the fingers folded and extended. Small red fills sit on the fingertips, and the inner areas are left unshaded against the skin. The design is centred on the ankle and sits on a red and blue tartan background.

The signal came up from the projection room at the Regal every Thursday, a hand lifted over the rail with one finger raised and the rest folded down, and I was the only one in the stalls who looked up for it. Dad said I had eyes like a gull. I had simply worked out that Mrs Pryce, who ran the booth alone since her husband's chest gave out, had nobody else to talk to.

We talked for two years without a word. She sent the signal to say the second reel was ready for changing, and I tapped the back of my seat twice to say I had seen it. On the Thursday in March the rain was coming in sideways across the market square, and when the lights went up at the interval the rail was empty. I went up the iron stairs anyway, past the cold ticket office, my coat still wet at the shoulders.

The booth smelled of hot dust and carbon. Her lamp was off. On the bench lay a tin of clippings, a pencil, and a sheet of paper on which someone had drawn the shape I had been watching all winter, the nails of the raised hand painted red in tiny careful strokes. Underneath, in a schoolroom hand, she had written: The spare key is under the third seat. Don't let them tell you I left in a hurry.

I found the key where she said. The reel was still turning in the next room, the picture running on without her, and I stood in the dark with my palm flat against the glass of the port hole, lifting one finger back at the empty seats below. It was the only answer I had ever been able to give her.
