Rock 'n' Roll script on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black script tattoo reading Rock 'n' Roll runs across the inside of a forearm near the wrist, with the lettering sitting centrally in the frame. The linework is thin and even with slightly uneven strokes, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The skin tone is light and the background is dark and out of focus, which keeps attention on the words.

The man in the old estate had a boot full of cassettes and a face like he expected to be searched for the rest of his life. Dennis, the senior officer, lifted the cases out one at a time and held each under the sodium lamp as if it might confess. I held the clipboard. It was November, the crossing at Harwich smelled of diesel and wet tarmac, and the radio in the hut was playing something with too much saxophone.

The passport said Leonard Pryce, musician, which Dennis read twice before looking up. Lenny said the band was called the Damp Matches and they had three gigs booked in Rotterdam that nobody had confirmed. Dennis asked what was in the tape cases. Lenny opened one. Inside was a sheet of card, and on it, in biro gone faint, someone had written two words and a phrase in a hand that leaned as if the page was moving. Rock 'n' Roll. The apostrophes were uneven, the strokes thin, the ink barely there.
"My sister wrote that," Lenny said. "Before she went to Canada. Said if I ever got stopped, I should show them something true."
Dennis looked at the card for a long time. Then he stamped the passport, handed it back, and told Lenny to get the Matches to Rotterdam before the coffee ran out.
After they had gone, I copied the words into the back of the day log, the way the sister had written them, slanting and quick. It was the only thing on the form that wasn't a number.
