Two small tattoos: a red and white rocket with the words and beyond in black script on the ribs, and a cowboy hat with the words to infinity in blue script on the thigh.

Rocket and cowboy hat tattoos with quotes

Lettering · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

Two separate tattoos are shown on bare skin. On the left, a small cowboy hat in brown tones sits above the words To Infinity in blue-grey script on the thigh. On the right, a red and white rocket with blue detailing sits above the words and beyond in black lettering on the side of the torso. The linework is clean and the colour is limited to a few solid fills, with the lettering in plain ink.

Dear Kieran, the lift has been dead since Tuesday, so I have been climbing to the fourteenth floor with the shopping and counting the landings out loud the way you used to. That is how I know I got to nine before I had to sit on the step by the bin chute. Mum says the council will fix it in March. Mrs Okafor on six says she will believe it when she sees it, and she has been saying that since the Jubilee.

I found the box under the bed while I was looking for my charger. Your felt cowboy hat is still in it, the one from the charity shop on the high street that you insisted was a proper ten-gallon job, and my tin rocket with the chipped nose. You went off to the coast with the hat in your coat pocket and I stayed put with the rocket on the windowsill. We were so sure the words on our skin would sort out the rest of it. To infinity, you wanted. I said and beyond, because somebody had to be sensible.

Last night I went up to the roof, which is not allowed, and stood where the wire fence bends. The estate was all orange lamps, and a plane blinked over the river, and I tried to work out how far beyond a plane can get before it stops being anywhere you can wave at. Not that far, it turns out. Just over the hill to the depot.

I have posted the hat back to you, so don't tell me you never got anything from me. Wear it when it rains. When you come home for Christmas, take the stairs with me and we will count them together, and I will leave the rocket on the sill so you know which window is mine. Love, Dee.
