Script quote and heart on forearms
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows two forearms held close together, one carrying two lines of cursive script and the other a small outlined heart. The lettering and heart are rendered in thin, even black linework with no shading. The ink is crisp against pale skin, with a cream sleeve and dark background softly out of focus.

Mind the third stair, it has a bark in it like a dog. Now sit, the lot of you, before the kettle boils dry and Mr Fenwick starts blaming the gas again. You want the Dacre sisters, and you'll have them the way old Mrs Crane gave them to me, with the teapot going cold.

Rose Dacre came down those stairs one morning in October with a trunk strapped shut and announced to the whole breakfast room that she was sailing for Canada on the Thursday boat. Her sister Ivy didn't look up from the rent book. She only wrote something in the margin in pencil, pushed the book across the cloth, and went back to her boiled egg. Rose read it standing up. Laugh as much as you breathe, it said, and under that, Love as long as you live. Neither of them ever said who started the quarrel, and neither of them ever finished it.
On the Thursday the fog came in off the water so thick you couldn't see the lamp on the end of the pier, and the boat stayed tied up at the quay. Rose walked out to the rail anyway, because she had her ticket and her pride. Ivy was already there, sitting on an upturned crate with her coat buttoned wrong, drawing a heart in the damp of the railing with one finger. Rose sat down beside her. Neither of them spoke for a long while. Then Ivy said something so foolish about the gulls that Rose laughed until she had to hold the rail, and the laughing turned into the other thing, and by the time the fog lifted the trunk was back in the cellar.
They're both in the churchyard now, up behind the lighthouse, side by side as they asked to be. The rent book is still in the hall drawer if you want to see the pencil. The heart in the margin is the only one in that whole book, and I've never once been able to tell which of them drew it.
