Rodeo rider on horseback with lettering on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A cowboy in a hat leans forward on a galloping horse, shown in shaded black and grey with dust kicked up beneath its hooves. Beside the scene, bold block lettering in a distressed typeface reads cow girls don't cry ride baby ride, stacked in lines. The design sits centred on the upper back, with the lettering and horse arranged diagonally and the image cropped at the shoulder and bottom edge.

The pony is already moving when you reach the top field, and the dust she kicks up hangs over Hartley Bank like smoke from the shaft. Uncle Dennis has chained the gate, but the chain has rusted slack, and nobody has ridden Tansy since the year the colliery shut its lower seam. Somebody should have told her that. She runs as if the coal still needs fetching.

Your mam shouts from the terrace below, her words thin on the wind, and you don't hear them properly. You have your heels against the grey's flanks and your fingers wound in a rope halter, and the slope drops away towards the rows of pit cottages with their washing hanging stiff from the last shift. Round the marker post, the way the Wrenbeck lads used to at the summer gala. Tansy takes the turn low, close enough to the stones that you feel them scatter under her hooves.
Back at the gate, Dennis is leaning on the post with his cap pushed back, pretending he hasn't been counting seconds. He doesn't say well done. He takes the rope from your hand, works the knot loose and looks at your palms the way he looks at a seam he has to trust.
The next morning someone has chalked it on the brick wall by the pithead, in capitals that slope downhill: ride, baby, ride. It takes the rain two days to wash it off, and by then half the village has read it twice.
