Car in smoke with script on ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a car seen from the rear, rising out of swirling smoke on the side of the ribs. A script line reading what appears to be "I'll see you again" sits beside the car in the smoke. The car is shaded with soft gradients and sharp highlights, and the smoke is rendered in lighter, blended greys against the skin.

Dennis wouldn't let anyone else near the clutch on that coupé, so when the Hollis lad turned up at the garage gates at six with a holdall over his shoulder, I knew he'd already made up his mind. The car was up on axle stands under the strip light, bonnet open, the tyres still pale with dust from the last run. We took it out to Skelby Field after dark, where the old runway had cracked into islands of weeds and nobody from the council came out on a Saturday.

He burnt the rear tyres until the whole field went grey. I stood by the fence with my hands in my pockets and watched the smoke roll over the headlights and turn them to smudges, the car coming out of it sideways like something surfacing. When the rubber gave out he killed the engine, leaned across the wheel, and said, not looking at me, 'I'll see you again, Tom.' I thought he meant the following Saturday. He meant the morning the coach pulled out for the coast with his name on the ticket.
Nobody went back to the field for a long while. The garage sold the coupé to a man from Lincoln who wanted it for parts. I still drove past the turn-off every Saturday on the way to my sister's, slowing a little at the gate. One evening in October a neighbour's bonfire had gone up across the lane, and the smoke came low over the hedge and sat on the road in front of me like a car waiting to pull out. I stopped and let it clear. There was nothing on the runway but the wind and the cracked white lines, and a tyre mark the rain had not yet taken.
