Heart and hand sign on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a heart outline with three short strokes above and a short dash to the right sits on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The hand is shown palm down, with a silver chain bracelet and black cord above the tattoo, set against a clear plastic covered background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain came sideways through the gap in Hollin Street market that Saturday, and it found every seam in the awning. I was counting coins under an upturned crate when the man at the apple stall started signing to the woman opposite, his fingers quick as sparrow feet, and she laughed out loud without looking up from her scales.

I'd sold him a bruised pear the week before, so I knew his hands better than his face. Teodor, who ran the corner stall, couldn't hear the lorries or the buskers or the gulls, but he could read the weather in people's shoulders. He caught me watching, held up three fingers, then pointed at the sky and tapped his chest. I had no idea what he meant, so I signed back something rude, and he laughed so hard he dropped a Braeburn.

After that I came early every Saturday with two teas from the van and a notebook. He taught me the letters first, then the words that mattered on a market: money, cold, sorry. Last of all he showed me the shape of love made with the hand, thumb and little finger out, the others folded down. He drew it on my wrist in biro while the rain drummed the plastic over our heads, and told me to keep it under a cuff until I was brave enough to show it.

The notebook is full now, and the stall is mine since his knees gave out. Last month a girl came in asking for a pear, and when I handed it over she made that same shape at me, shy as anything. I signed it back before I could think. Outside the rain was still falling on the plastic sheeting, and for once I didn't mind getting wet.
