Roman numeral tattoos on wrists, neck and chest
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
This collage shows several close-up photographs of Roman numeral tattoos in a clean serif lettering style. The numerals are set in solid black ink on wrists, the back of the neck, the upper chest and the upper back, with some shown on a forearm. Most photos are black and white or desaturated, and the layout places the words ROMAN NUMERAL TATTOO in bold black type over a white panel.

Ruby Acaster kept the steel punches in a biscuit tin beside the cash drawer, twelve of them, and on a Saturday in October 1959 she could not find the X. Behind the velvet curtain the Ray Kemp Quintet was already thumping through a foxtrot, and the cloakroom counter was piling up with damp wool and mackintoshes that smelt of drizzle. She fished about in the tin, cold metal against her knuckles, while Mr Pryce hollered from the bar for another tray of lemonade.

Frank Dorrell was third in the queue, in the same grey mac as every week and the same hat, which he took off before he spoke. He handed over his ticket and she handed back a brass disc, stamped with the date in dotted numerals because Pryce said they looked official. XXII·X·MCMLIX. Frank turned it over in his palm the way other men turned a cigarette. "Stamp the date on the back as well," he said. "In case I lose the front."
She told him it was a cloakroom, not a jeweller's, and he laughed, a short surprised sound, and said his late mother had kept her recipes in a tin just like hers. Ruby pressed the punch onto the back of the disc anyway. Then, because the ink pad was still wet, she dabbed it on the inside of his wrist below the cuff, only to see whether he would flinch. He didn't. He studied the faint black numerals as though they were a receipt he meant to keep.
"Right," he said, tucking the disc into his waistcoat pocket and settling the hat back on his head. "Now I'll always know which night I was dancing."
