Script quote tattoos on hip, forearms and thigh
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The collage shows four close photographs of quotations in black script lettering on skin. The hip, two forearms and thigh each carry a different phrase, with the thin, fluid linework showing little shading. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the images are framed on light, neutral backgrounds.

Mum's kettle has finally died, so I am writing this on the back of the gas bill with your old biro, which skips on every third word. The lift in Hollins House was out again when I got back from the hospital, so I climbed all fourteen floors counting landings the way you used to count lamp posts. Mrs Adeyemi on eleven was waiting by her door with a tin of ginger biscuits and news that the council has finally put up a notice about the bins.

I went up to see your room before coming here. The damp has spread across the ceiling in a shape like a map of somewhere we never went, and your felt-tip arrows are still on the skirting. Do you remember what you said the night Dad left the first time? That you would fall down seven times and stand up eight, just to annoy him. You were nine and thought it was the cleverest thing anyone had ever said. I never told you the eighth time is the hardest, because I think you already knew.
In the drawer under your bed I found a sheet torn from a library book. Someone had copied out a line about wandering in your careful joined-up hand, and underneath, smaller, was enjoy the little things. I laughed until I had to sit on the mattress. Then I cried, which the neighbours will have heard through the wall, since this building carries everything.
So come home at Easter, or don't, but send a photo of the new flat. I will pin it above the kettle, next to the list of things you still owe me. You were right about not dreaming your life away, so go on and live it. Just leave the landing light on for me. Love, Auntie Dot.
