Four panels show black lettering tattoos in script and ornate scrollwork: Spanish text on a wrist, a shoulder blade and a finger, plus a line on the lower back.

Spanish script tattoos on wrist, back and finger

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The collage shows four photographs of small Spanish phrases in black ink. The wrist has a thin, cursive line of text, the upper back has a longer quote set in a decorative scrolled frame, a finger carries the single word Amor in flowing script, and a line on the lower back reads El éxito es la mejor venganza. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the image is composed as a grid of close crops on skin.

You are alone in the bakery at four, the oven ticking as it cools from the night's first bake, and Ximena's chalk is still on the board above the proving drawers: Canta y no llores. Sing and don't cry. She left on Sunday with two suitcases, a rolling pin she swore was hers, and a tin of cardamom you have decided not to mention to anyone.

Nobody else is up to knead. You work the dough by feel, slapping and folding until your forearms burn, then shape the bolillos and set them in rows of nine on the floured boards. The radio on the shelf plays the old song she used to hum off key, the one about the little sky and the hearts, and you hum it worse. The flour hangs in the single bulb's light like something that has decided to stay.

At half past four the van from the hospital canteen has not come, and the phone sits face down beside the scales. In the drawer where she kept her recipe cards you find an envelope marked for the morning. Inside is a single card in her looping hand, its edges trimmed into a scrolled frame: El éxito es la mejor venganza. Underneath, smaller, she has written that the bread will not forgive you if you bake it tired.

You slide the first tray into the oven and close the door. Behind the glass the loaves begin to rise, pale then gold, and you laugh once, loudly, into the empty room.
