The band packed up at eleven and the bulb over the cloakroom door gave one last sizzle and died, so I'm writing this by the light of the lamp where Mrs Arkwright keeps her cigarettes and her good scissors. Mother will be furious I've left the lamp on, but she can take it up with the Corporation.

You'll remember the sign over the front doors, the word FAITH in curly painted letters that Mr Pryce's father put up before the war. Somebody's ladder slipped years ago and left a long stroke right through the middle of it, and the paint ran so two little dots sat beside the F like a full stop nobody wanted. Dad always said it was the most honest thing on Hollins Street, a word that had been crossed out and left up anyway. Tonight Eddie Vance asked me to dance and I said yes before I could think, and he counted the steps out loud like a catechism, one two three, and trod on my hem twice.

I asked him at the end whether he believed in the sign. He looked up at it for a long while and said he believed in the band, and in the walk home, and in me, if I didn't mind him saying so. That was more than I expected from a boy who can't keep time.

I'll post this in the morning so it catches the first train. Tell Dad the dots are still there, and that nobody has had the nerve to paint them out.
