Turtle and Trust script on inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small turtle with a hexagonal shell pattern, outlined head and flippers sits above the word Trust in cursive script, running diagonally down the wrist. The linework is thin and even in black ink, with no shading beyond the shell pattern. The tattoo is centred on the inner wrist against plain skin, with a dark background behind the arm.

Dear Mum, I know you hate it when I write on the back of the rota, but the ward is quiet tonight and Sister Okafor has gone to lie down in the store cupboard with her feet up on a box of gloves. So here I am, pen in my teeth, writing to you about the turtle.

You remember Mr Pargeter in bay four, the one who kept a tank of terrapins on his windowsill at home and wouldn't stop talking about them? He died on Thursday, and his daughter came in before dawn with a carrier bag full of his things. In the bottom was a little plastic turtle he'd carved from a bar of soap, the shell scored in hexagons with a hatpin. She asked me to take it. I didn't know what to say, so I said I'd keep it safe, and I've had it in my pocket all shift like a stone.
When the lights dipped at three I sat with him for a while and tried to remember what he'd told me about terrapins. Something about how they go to the same bit of pond every spring, however far they've wandered, because they trust the water to still be there. Daft, I know. But it helped more than the tea.
I'm going to ask Dan at the tattoo place on Saturday to put a little one on my wrist, the same shape as his. You can tell me off in person.
Love, Rosie
