A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Ardern kept the lever at Harrow Mere for thirty-one winters, and every one of them she tied the same knot: two loops crossed through the middle, the ends rolled tight into spirals so the cord could not walk loose in the wind. Her father had shown her on the signal box stair, and his father had shown him. The rule was simple. A knot tied right would hold a line shut until somebody who knew the knot came to undo it.

The autumn the Keswick branch was closed, a boy of fourteen came up the platform carrying a bundle of grey cord from the lost property office. He said his mother had worked the box at Thornly before the flood took the line. Nell took the cord without a word, unrolled it across her knee, and began to teach him the knot, loop over loop, the spirals turned inward like the ends of a fern. He got it wrong four times. On the fifth he laughed, and she told him that was the first sign it would hold.

In December the fog came down thick as wool, and the night mail was due with a broken signal lamp. Nell climbed the stair with her lantern and found the boy already there, his fingers raw, the knot half made. Between them they bound the lever. The train came through at a crawl, its whistle low and sorry, and the cord creaked and stayed shut. In the morning the boy untied it himself, slowly, the way she had shown him, and laid the cord on the sill to dry in the thin light.
