Black and grey floral bouquet on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large bouquet of lily-like flowers, with buds, spiky foliage and a round seed head, fills the upper arm and extends over the shoulder. The petals are shaded with soft grey gradients and defined by fine dark outlines, with detailed stamens visible on the larger blooms. The design is entirely black and grey, and the composition wraps around the curve of the arm against a plain black top.

Mrs Pargeter never allowed flowers in the front parlour. They shed on the piano, she said, and the carpet had been laid in 1926 and would not forgive them. So when the lodger in number six came down the first morning of June carrying a bundle of gladioli wrapped in yesterday's Gazette, I assumed he was about to be shown the door. Instead she took the bundle from him, trimmed the stems on the slant with the bread knife, and stood them in the blue jug on the sideboard, where they have stayed every summer since.

The flowers came from the strip of ground along the back wall, where my grandfather planted the corms the year the harbour wall was rebuilt. They open in August like fists of pink paper, one bloom after another up the spike, with stamens curling out of the throats like bent wire. Beside them grow the thistles nobody will pull, and the grey seed heads that rattle when the wind comes off the water. Mr Haverstock, who had lodged with us for eleven winters and taught the village boys to draw, used to sit on the back step with a board on his knees and sketch them until the light went.
The last summer he stayed, he left the board propped against the jug. The drawing was all soft grey pencil, the petals shaded so gently they seemed to be breathing, and in the corner he had written, in small square capitals, KEEP THE BLUE JUG FILLED. Mrs Pargeter read it twice, turned the board face down, and went to fetch the scissors. We have cut the spikes every August since, one for each room, and the petals still fall on the stairs regardless.
