Dotwork mandala on the elbow
Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala with a central rosette and layered petals sits over the elbow. The design is built from dense dotwork stippling and fine line detail, with light grey shading that gives the petals depth. The background is a pale arm against a grey floor and wall, and a faded tattoo is visible on the upper arm.

The beech mast had come down early that year, and Ida Pell was on her knees in the clearing before the church bell at Hollin Edge had finished striking six.

She laid the nuts out the way her mother had taught her, a rosette of acorn cups at the centre, then a ring of hazel catkins, then the petals, eight deep, each one filled with mast pressed in by a single fingertip. Nothing was drawn. Her mother had been firm on that. A line will break in the wet, she'd said, but a dot holds its ground. Tobias sat on the stile behind her eating a heel of bread and counting under his breath, and every so often he got the number wrong and she made him start again.
The steward from Calderbank came up the track just after nine, in a good coat, with two men and a measuring chain. He said the road would go straight through the wood by Candlemas, and that the lady of the manor would be grateful if the old woman would kindly clear her rubbish from the path. He stepped over the outermost petal, and his boot caught the edge of the rosette, and a dozen acorn cups skittered across the frost.
Ida did not look up. She picked them back, one by one, and set them in their places. By noon a thaw had come and the men had gone, and the steward's chain lay coiled in a ditch. When Tobias finally dared to look, the frost had melted from the clearing everywhere except inside the petals, where the ground stayed white and the mast sat in its rings like a flower pressed in a book.
