Rose and pocket watch on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey rose sits at the top of the design, with a pocket watch with Roman numerals and a chain hanging down beside it. The rose petals and leaves are shaded with soft gradients, while the watch face and chain use fine, sharp linework. The tattoo is centred on the front of a thigh, with a grey skirt and a hand with blue nail polish at the top of the frame.

The watch on the stall had stopped at twenty to four, and by the third day of the Michaelmas fair the whole row of gaming booths had started teasing me about it. I had found it in the lining of my father's coat, a silver pocket watch with Roman numerals worn soft at the edges and a chain that ended in a T-bar, and I had carried it from Lincoln to Doncaster without once opening the back.

On Thursday Mrs Penhallow, who sold roses from the next trestle, leaned across and tapped the glass with a bitten fingernail. 'Stopped clocks keep their own hours, love. Ask the wheel what it wants before you go poking it.' I laughed, but that night, when the generator dropped to a hum and the big wheel went dark one bulb at a time, I sat on the caravan step with a jeweller's loupe and a bent hairpin and listened.
The trouble was a spring that had seized around a single flake of rust, shaped like the edge of a leaf. I eased it free by the light of the chip shop sign across the field. When the second hand jerked and began its small steady walk, I heard Mrs Penhallow's laugh carry over the dodgems, but when I looked up her wagon was dark and empty, and a single red rose lay on my step with its stem wrapped twice in chain.
I wound the watch to twenty past nine, the hour the lights had gone out, and let the T-bar swing against my palm all the way back to the lorry.
