Dear Oona, the crate came up from the hydroponic spine this morning, and the rose inside had three heads, each one further open than the last, tucked against a pair of leaves gone the colour of wet slate. Hakim says the cuttings are from the old Kew stock we salvaged from the Mars Bay greenhouse, and that the grey shading in the petals is a mutation, not a fault. I told him a flower that turns silver at the edges has earned the right to call itself a survivor.

The bay is still dim. We have cut the lamps to two hours a day to spare the cells for the pump, and the children have stopped asking when the sky will be blue again. Still the rose opens the way it did in the nursery photographs, one bud sulking shut, one half-turned away, the largest already spilling its outer petals over the rail like a letter someone forgot to finish.
Hakim wants to graft a fourth bloom onto the lowest branch, where the cluster would hang nearest the floor. I said no. Three is enough for one family. A fourth would mean someone had to be the bud that never opens, and I would rather it be me.
