Black and grey lettering tattoo with a rose on the outer thigh of a woman in shorts and a checked shirt tied at the waist.

Rose and script tattoo on a thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A woman stands on a wooden deck, cropped below the lips, with a tattoo on her outer thigh. The tattoo combines a rose at the top with script lettering below, in black and grey ink with fine, shaded linework. Warm, vintage-style colour grading and a plain pale wall form the background, and the tattoo sits near the centre-left of the frame.

The nets came in wet on Tuesday, and Mags Pelling knelt on the quay with a bone needle in one hand and a knife in her teeth, working a tear the length of a forearm back into shape. Nobody had asked her to. The Lark of Skerrow was three days overdue, and the harbour master had stopped pretending he wasn't watching the mouth of the bay.

Her father's sea chest had come up from the net loft that morning, damp at the corners, with a bundle of letters tied in tarred twine. Most were from the chandler in Hull, asking after credit. One was not. It was folded round a pressed rose, the petals gone the colour of old tea, and the words along the bottom edge were written in pencil so faint she had to tilt the page to the window: keep the line tight and the boy will find his way home.

She had never thought of her brother as a boy. He had been the one on the pier shouting at gulls while she did the knots. She tied off the last mesh, pulled it hard enough to hear the twine sing, and pinned the rose to the lintel above the loft door with a rusted fishhook.

Round the headland, a lamp swung once, then again. Mags stood up, wiped her hands on her oilskin, and went to tell the harbour master he could stop watching now.
