Small dark tattoo on a thigh with knit cardigan
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A full-length photograph of a woman standing on a blue wooden deck, with her head cropped at the lips. She wears a burgundy knit cardigan over a black graphic t-shirt, black shorts, patterned socks and brown lace-up boots. A small, dark tattoo is visible on her outer thigh, drawn in black or grey ink, with its design partly obscured by shadow and the image's resolution.

The lamp above the ticket hatch at Harwich had been drawing moths since before the war, and Dennis Okafor, who had kept the night desk for eleven winters, swore the same grey one came back every October. He swept it off the glass with a folded timetable, and it always returned, dusting the brass with its wings until the paint went soft.

The Hook of Holland boat was late that night, so the stevedores drank tea from his urn and argued about a dog that had gone over the side in March. A young deckhand called Pim, who carried a tin of fish paste and a torn map of Rotterdam in his coat, asked why Dennis never shut the hatch on the moth. "Because it was here first," Dennis said. "The desk came later."
At four the fog came up off the water like wet wool. Pim climbed the gangway with his collar up, and Dennis found a second ticket in the drawer, stamped for a crossing nobody had booked, the name line left blank. He stamped it anyway and slid it under the glass toward the dark corner where the moth had gone.
The ferry sounded its horn twice. By morning the ticket was gone, and the brass was wiped clean in a neat small circle, as if something had settled there and decided to leave with the tide.
