Full sleeve with hooded figure and skull

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A full sleeve tattoo shows a hooded figure beside a skull-like face, with a dense smoky backdrop and clouds above. The shading is soft and detailed, with fine highlights and deep shadows that give the figures a three-dimensional form. The image is made up of two photographs of the same arm, one close and one from the side, with the wearer's face not visible.

She stood by the fire doors with her face in the shadow of her hood, and beside her, a little higher than her shoulder, hung a pale skull on a thread of smoke, as if it were a lantern someone had forgotten to light. Clouds sat low in the stairwell window behind her. The porter asked her what she wanted. She said she was only counting, and that she was nearly finished.

He walked her the length of the corridor, past the drip stands and the sleeping chairs, and at each bed she stopped and laid two fingers on the blanket. Some beds she passed without a pause. At the last one, an old man was awake, watching the ceiling tiles as if they were weather.

"Not yet," the porter said. "He's been waiting for his daughter. She's on the coach from Leeds."

The hooded woman tilted her head. Smoke rolled off her sleeve and into the room. "Then I'll sit with him until she comes," she said, and she did, in the chair by the window, while the porter went down to meet the coach.
