Rose and vine tattoo on upper arm and shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with wet dark hair drinks yellow juice from a mason jar through an orange straw, with the camera cropped below her nose. A large rose and trailing vine tattoo covers her shoulder and upper arm, drawn with soft shading and fine detail in the petals and leaves. The ink is black and grey against warm wooden slats in the background, and a smaller dark tattoo sits lower on the arm.

The orchard wall at Greyhallow had a rose that nobody had planted. It came up in the cracks of the old lime mortar the spring after the storm took the gate, and by midsummer its canes had crept along the stones and over the lintel of the cottage where Maud Fennick kept the bees. She let it be. Bees like a rose, and a rose will keep a thief honest by catching his sleeve.

The lighthouse keeper's boy came up the lane one August with a jar of pressed apple and a sore foot, and asked why she had not cut the thing back. Maud told him the rose was a vine when it wanted to be, and went on bottling the honey. He sat on the step and watched the sea come in grey over the rocks beyond the point. When he left, she gave him the jar with a twist of orange paper pushed under the lid, to be opened when the fog came down.
In October the fog came down for nine days. The boy, grown now and tending the light himself, opened the jar on the seventh night and found inside it a single cutting, green at the tip, with a thorn already on it. He carried it up the tower stairs in his coat pocket. At the top he set it in a crack of the lamp-room sill, where the wind could not reach, and in the morning the light went out over the water as it always had, and the rose kept growing on the stone.
