Hob had been asleep since the first frost, so it was the stag who found the lane blocked by a fallen pine. Ansel stood in the thorn hedge with his antlers snarled in briar, the old roses he had grown there for twenty summers now tangled across his brow, and he did not move until the blackbirds started. Someone had to clear the way before the carter came up from Kilbrannan with the salt.

He worked the trunk loose with his shoulder, then with his hooves, until the bark had skinned him raw and the sun was a pale coin over the ridge. Below the lane the village was still a grey smudge of chimney smoke. Nobody down there thought of the two of them as more than stories told to children: the bear who stole honey from the church hives, and the stag who would not leave the rose garden alone.

When the carter finally rounded the bend he found the road open and a stag standing guard over a heap of cut logs. On the frosted stone at the edge of the track lay a single red rose, its petals still tight. The carter stopped his cart and sat for a long while looking at it. Then he climbed down, picked it up, and set it in the crook of the nearest branch, where a sleeping bear would find it come spring.
