The kettle is still warm on the van stove and the Big Wheel has stopped again at Dunmow, so I have an hour before Mr Crane starts shouting about the generator. You asked if I'd kept the wire from Ma's sewing tin. I have. It is the length of a dinner knife, bent once into a loop and then flicked straight at the end, the way she bent a hairpin to hold a curl. I carry it in my top pocket and it has worn the lining into the shape of a question mark.

Trade is poor this season. Nobody wins the goldfish any more, and the lad on the rifle range has started charging for a second go. Last Tuesday a girl of about nine came to the bottle stall with a fistful of coins and a hairpin of her own, asking whether we could make the ring toss rings any bigger. I told her the rings were fine and it was the bottles that lied. She laughed so hard she dropped the lot and had to chase a penny under the coconut shy.

I think I'll leave the circuit after Harlow. The van needs new tyres and I am tired of the sound the ferris wheel makes at night, like a long breath let out slowly. If your spare room is still spare, I'll come in October. Bring the good tin of pins. We can bend one together and see how much it will hold before it gives.
