Gold lotus and leaf temporary tattoos on legs

Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A woman sits cross-legged on a blue patterned mat, holding a jar of green smoothie with a straw. Two gold metallic tattoos are visible: a sprig of leaves on the ankle and a larger lotus-style floral motif on the calf, both in fine, flat outlines. The warm, bright outdoor lighting and top-down framing place the gold designs against tanned skin and the blue mat.

The pond behind Hollin Farm froze so hard in the second week of January that the ducks walked across it and complained about the cold. Old Ruth Pennick, who kept the byre and the bees, said it was a bad sign. Her grandson Tam said it was only frost.

On the morning of the Feast of the Candle, Tam went out with the axe to break the ice for the cows' trough and found a lotus standing up through the middle of the pond. It was not green. Its petals were beaten gold, thin as the foil off a sweet wrapper, and its stalk ran down through the ice into the black water below. Round its base, leaves had come up in a sprig, one by one, as if someone had pressed them there with a thumb.

He tried to chop it out. The axe rang and bounced back and left no mark on it. Ruth came down in her coat and looked a long while, then fetched the jar of heather honey from the dresser and poured a thread of it onto the ice at the flower's root. 'Flowers want paying,' she said. 'Winter's a bad landlord.' By evening the lotus had opened one more petal, and the ducks had all come to stand round it like guests at a wedding.

The thaw came early that year and the pond went soft and brown, but the gold flower did not sink. It floats still in the far corner by the alder. In March the leaves curl at their edges, and every spring Tam pours the first honey on the water before he goes near the hives, and the ducks, which never learned any sense, still come to stand beside it.
