Rose bouquet and green rose on arms

Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A cropped view of a woman from the chest down, with her hand resting in the pocket of pale blue jeans. A black linework bouquet of roses sits on the upper arm, and a small dark paisley-style motif is on the forearm above a green-toned rose near the wrist. The plain white wall behind keeps the focus on the tattoos.

The boat came in on the north tide with nothing in it but a clay jug and a man who would not say where he had been. Mairi took the jug up the shingle to her mother's door because it was heavy and the man was asleep in the bottom of the hull. Inside, wrapped in wet sacking, were three roses cut from a garden that did not appear on any chart.

Her mother set them in water on the windowsill and said nothing for a whole day. On the second morning the petals had opened wider than roses should, and the stems had sprouted small dark leaves curled like the paisley on the shawl Mairi's grandmother wore to the kirk. The islanders came to look. Old Tormod said the flowers were a ransom. Mrs Gillies said they were a bride's gift gone astray. Nobody knew whose they were until the autumn gales took the man back out, and the jug was found empty on the rocks below the kirk.

Mairi kept the roses through the winter in a vase her mother had thrown from island clay. In spring she tied a green cutting to the byre door with red thread, and it took. Every year after that a green rose opened beside the gate. The islanders said that anyone who left a sea-smoothed stone on the sill would be let home safely, though nobody had ever tested it.
