Minimal dots and a small curl tattoo

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a person in a white textured top and light wash jeans, with one hand in a pocket and silver cuff bracelets worn on the wrist and upper arm. Three small black dots or dashes sit on the inner forearm, and a tiny curled black mark sits on the lower abdomen above the waistband. The fine, thin linework is crisp against the skin, and the image is neutral and bright with a plain white backdrop.

Below decks the galley smelt of scorched oats and wet wool. The cook had left the range banked, and Mrs Ffoulkes, the purser's widow who had signed on as a favour, was sitting at the scrubbed table with her gloves still on. She had been counting the tins aloud for an hour so she would not have to think about the lifeboats. When Walter came down with the pencil in his teeth and the scrap of manifest in his hand, she looked up and said nothing, which was the kindest thing anyone had done for him all week.

He wrote the letters out as they came back to him: S, O, S, and then the hook, that last stroke that curled back on itself like a fern not yet unfurled. The old operators at Lizard had called it the turn, and nobody agreed what it meant. Walter had always thought it was simply a man who wanted to be sure he was understood.

At four in the morning the answer came from the north, a single dash and a tiny looping return. Walter pressed it into the manifest and carried it up the companionway without waiting to see whether the tea had boiled.
