The theodolite had been sulking since Tuesday, so it fell to you to sight the line from the bench mark by the Methodist chapel, up over the slate roofs of Hallam Row, and out to the old triangulation pillar on Gorse Hill. Mr Pilling wanted it square before the council men came back from Harrogate. You knocked the first stake in with your father's hammer, and the morning stayed grey and very still.

Halfway up the slope the line ran straight into Mrs Oddie's rose garden. She met you at the gate in her apron, arms folded, and said the bearing would have to go round her Albertine or else. You told her a line could not go round anything. She looked at the pegs, then at you, and said her husband had planted that rose the summer before the war and it had never once bent for a surveyor. You stood there a long while. Then she laughed, which you had not expected, and told you to take your line and mind the bees.

The pillar was where the map promised, a squat stone triangle with a brass disc set in its top. You knelt, sighted back down the bearing, and saw the chapel spire, the rose's open head nodding over the garden wall, and beyond it the lane running dead straight to your own front door. Someone had shot true across this valley long before you were born, and all you had done was find the mark they left.
