Rose cluster on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of three open roses with layered petals and surrounding leaves, drawn in black outline. The petals and leaves are shaded with fine stippling and hatching, with no colour ink. The design sits on the outer thigh and is framed by a dark grey garment at the top of the frame.

I went through the shed yesterday looking for the pruning saw and found Gran's tin of pen nibs and tracing card, the ones she used on the feed sacks when she wanted something prettier to look at than cabbages. Three roses, open, one tucked behind the next, with leaves drawn in so fine you need the lamp held close to see the hatching. She never inked a stroke on anyone, mind. She drew them every winter to keep her hand steady.
The bailiff's boy came for the heifers on Tuesday and asked whether we'd sell the top field. I told him the field has grown nothing but thistles since the well dried up, and that the roses are the only thing on this farm that has ever gone exactly where it was put. He laughed and left his card under a stone on the gatepost.
I'm not selling. I've decided that the way Gran decided things, by drawing them out on card until they looked settled. Come at Easter if the lane is passable, and bring the good scissors. Your loving sister, Nell.
