Rose cluster on the side ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of three open roses and a rosebud, with leaves and stems, runs diagonally down the side of the torso. The shading is soft and greyscale, with darker tones in the petal folds and lighter highlights across the blooms. The design sits on bare skin, with a white top and a domestic interior blurred in the background.

Sit down, the lot of you, and stop pretending you don't remember Miss Pennock's roses. For forty years she kept that bed by the bike sheds, and every July the head boy was sent out with secateurs and a bucket to keep them alive through the summer holidays. Nobody ever saw her cut one.

The year of the fire drill, Brenda Vosper found a rosebud pressed between the pages of the register, black at the edges, and she swore it was meant for her. Three of us went out to the bed that night with a torch. We counted four blooms going over and one still tight as a fist, and we argued until the caretaker came out in his slippers about which one was Dennis Harker, who had left in March without saying goodbye to anybody.

We never settled it. Pennock retired, the bike sheds came down, and the roses went into a builder's skip in 1987. I still have a cutting in a jam jar on my windowsill, grey and stubborn, and it has never once opened.

So when you ask me what I remember, that's what I'll tell you. Drink your tea. Somebody has to hold the bud and wait.
