Cat outline on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small single-line outline of a cat seen from behind, sitting on a short horizontal ledge with its tail curling down. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is black. The tattoo is centred on the back of the neck against pale skin, with blonde hair and an ear visible at the edge of the frame.

You unlock the back door at ten to four, and the cat is already there, perched on the ledge above the proving racks with her back to you. Marrow never turns round to greet anyone. She sits as if the room were a window she has been asked to mind, grey tail curled over the edge of the wood, and you have long since stopped trying to coax her down before the flour is out of the sack.

You work the rye while the radio murmurs about road closures on the ring road. The dough is stubborn and sticky, and you talk to it the way Halina taught you, low and steady, telling it there is no hurry. Marrow ignores both of you. Her ears angle towards the lane beyond the yard, where the one working streetlamp drips its orange onto the wet cobbles and nothing else moves.

At twenty past five the milk float hums round the corner, quiet as a held breath, and her tail lifts a fraction and sets back down. You had thought she simply liked the warmth from the ovens. But she has sat in that exact spot every morning since March, the week Halina's knee gave out and the early shift became yours, and you realise now she is waiting for the same thing Halina always did: the first tray, the first sharp smell of crust, the sound of the shutter going up across the road.

You slide the boule into the oven and close the door on the heat. Marrow stretches, drops from the ledge without a sound, and walks past your boots to the cooling rack, where she settles in the one patch of warmth the bread has left behind.
