Small tornado tattoo on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Colour · Photo
A small tornado is drawn on the back of a person's neck, with the hair pulled up and away from the skin. The funnel is built from thin, loose, swirling lines with a dark reddish-brown outline and light grey shading, and it tapers into a narrow point at the bottom. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against plain skin, with a black shoulder strap visible at the bottom edge.

The flour had gone grey on the sill before the bell of the lower village rang, and Mother Agathe still had not lit the oven. The wind had been wrong since midnight, coming off the salt marsh in long turning gusts that rattled the shutters and drew ash up the chimney in little spinning threads.

Her son Piet came in from the well with his bucket empty and his face the colour of cold porridge. There is a column standing in the reeds, he said, with its root in the water and its top in the clouds, and it is walking this way. Agathe went to the door and saw it: a grey funnel lowering itself out of the sky, narrowing to a point above the marsh, turning slow and sure as a spindle. The villagers had always said the storm took what it was owed. Nobody had ever said what that was.
She did not wait to be told. She worked the dough with flour to her elbows, pressed it flat on the board, and scored a spiral into the round with the tip of a knife, one turn winding inward to a single point. She put it in the oven while the storm came up the lane, rattling tiles, and when the crust was gold she carried it out on the flat shovel and held it up to the sky.
The wind took the loaf from her hands as gently as a mother takes a sleeping child. It lifted, turned once, and rose into the funnel with its spiral catching the light, then the column bent away over the marsh and was gone. At dawn the village woke to a soft fall of crumbs across every roof and every square, and Piet swore the lines of the bread were still turning in the grey light long after the sky had cleared.
