She ducked into the narrowboat cabin, set it on the table beneath the brass lamp and unwound the cloth one fold at a time.

The commission card was tucked under its arm: Please don't make her new. Only keep her as she was, love. The roses on the chest had been painted with a brush so fine it was almost a rumour, black and grey, petals curling back on themselves, stems running up toward the lace. Where the paint had worn at one edge, a pencil line showed beneath, rubbed and redrawn, a rose that had been started three times before it agreed to stay.

She worked until the stove went cold. Spirit on a cotton bud lifted the grime from the lace without touching the ink, and a damp brush took a fleck of dust from the petal tips. Near the base of the largest bloom, scratched so lightly she had to angle the lamp low, were two letters, R and T, and beneath them a date from before Mara was born.

When Mrs Harrow came for it at nine, the canal was steaming and the towpath gold. She turned the doll over in her hands for a long time. 'You did it properly,' she said, and paid without asking what the letters meant. Mara watched her walk away up the path, the roses bright against the grey coat, and felt the boat knock gently against the bank as the frost let go of it.
