Feather tattoo near the collarbone
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small feather is tattooed on the upper chest, angled diagonally from the collarbone towards the shoulder. It has fine, fibrous linework and soft grey shading, with a dark round marking near the quill that resembles a peacock feather eye. The image is a tight, softly lit crop showing the tattoo, a small mole, auburn hair and a white top, with the lips and chin visible at the top of the frame.

The ward goes quiet at half past two, and you are the only one still awake to hear the drip stand creak. Mrs Okafor in bed six has been asking for her husband's coat since midnight, and you have stopped telling her it is hanging at home because she no longer believes you. Instead you hold her hand and count the squares on the ceiling tiles until the corridor lights seem to hum a little louder.

Near dawn she slides something out from under her pillow: a peacock feather, gone brittle at the tip, its dark round eye still sharp enough to catch the light from the nurses' station. "Derek brought it back from the fair in Margate, nineteen seventy-one," she says. "He said it would keep watch while he was on the late shifts at the depot." You turn it over carefully. The barbs have split and the fine threads curl like pencil smoke. You tell her it looks as though it has been watching over her all along, and she laughs, which is what you wanted.
When the day staff arrive you tuck the feather into your breast pocket, meaning to return it at handover, and then forget it in your locker. You find it again at the end of the shift, a faint grey dust clinging to your fingertips. You walk out into the car park while the sky is still the colour of pencil lead, and the eye on the feather seems to follow you all the way to the bus stop.
