Rose tattoo on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm carries a large cluster of roses with shaded petals and fine outlines, with leaves extending to the lower edge of the frame. The tattoo uses soft grey shading and dark linework on light skin, with no colour ink. The hand rests against a white textured bedspread, and the arm is angled diagonally across the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The circus at Harrow Fen had lost its big tent in a wet March, and by August it had lost most of its people. Only old Mabel Sallow stayed on, with a grey elephant called Dunmore who would no longer kneel, and a caravan painted with roses that had faded to the colour of weak tea. The rose garden behind the winter quarters had gone to briar. Nobody had pruned it since the owner's wife died.

One evening a boy came up the lane with a bundle on his back and a pair of shears in his belt. He said a man in Lowestoft had told him the Sallow caravan had a garden that could mend a broken show. Mabel laughed at him, then fed him. In the morning she sent him into the briars with the shears and told him to cut back to the living wood. He worked three days. Under the dead canes he found roses still green at the root, pale at first, then deep red where the sun reached them, and when he bruised the leaves they smelled of cold pennies.

On the fourth day the band came down the lane, five of them, carrying their instruments through the rain. They had heard the garden was blooming. Dunmore lifted his head and trumpeted once across the field. Mabel told them the roses had waited all winter for someone to tend them rather than sell them, and the band said that was a fair reason to come back. The boy said nothing, but he stayed.

They opened again the following spring, small and muddy, the ring no bigger than a kitchen table. The boy wore a grey coat and walked the wire with a red rose tucked behind one ear. Folk came from three villages to see a thing that had no business still standing. Mabel sat by the caravan counting petals on her fingers and never once asked him where he had come from.
