Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand with long nude nails rests on a white cushioned surface, wearing several wide gold rings and a gold wristwatch. The image is warm toned with mostly black ink and no colour ink visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gate at Harrowmere has not opened since your grandmother's time, but the lock still answers to a key, and the key is cut from a wedding band. You carry it in a tin on the cart, wrapped in lint, because the ironwork is what the village pays for: scrollwork as black as the ink on the hands of the men who cut it, vines feeding into vines until nobody can say where one stem ends.

Old Tobias Penrose told you the castle was built by a lord who wanted his gate to look like a hedge in winter, so no enemy could tell where the thorns stopped. You thought it nonsense until you knelt in the mud at the postern, traced a leaf with your thumb, and found the rivet underneath, bright as a coin.

The bailiff's daughter came up the causeway at dusk with rings on every finger, heavy gold bands wide enough to hide a thumbnail. She said her father owed the steward a debt and she would pay it herself. She held out her hand, palm down, and the gold clicked against the iron bars as she spread her fingers. 'Open it,' she said, 'and I'll stop wearing these.'

You did not open it. You took the rings one by one, weighed each in your palm, and found them hollow, packed with sand from the dry moat. Sand runs out. Iron does not. You left her standing at the gate, and by morning the thorn-leaves had grown a little tighter across the arch, the way they always do when someone has tried to buy their way through.
