Small black script mark on the wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with nude, long coffin-shaped nails holds the photographer's wrist area in focus, showing a small black tattoo of a looping script-like mark on the inner wrist. The linework is solid black with no visible shading, and the mark is small and sits just above the watch strap. The image is dominated by beige and white tones, with a cream handbag and white sleeve in the background.

The monogram had to be right before the invitations went out, and Mrs Fairweather had made that very clear on the phone on Tuesday. Two letters, an E and an L, joined by a loop that dipped below the line like a fishing line after a tug. I had been practising it on the back of old till receipts for three evenings, and my hand had stopped feeling like mine.

The trouble was that the loop kept closing. Every version I drew looked like a knot, not a promise. On Thursday she came into the shop with a shoebox, and inside was a recipe card in her mother's handwriting, the ink faded to the colour of weak tea. Scrawled at the bottom were the same two letters, the loop left open at the top like a door someone meant to walk back through.
I copied it exactly, nib steady, breath held, and when I finished she held the card to the window for a long time without saying anything. Then she asked whether I could lift the loop a little, so it would catch the light on the cream card stock. I said I could. It was the only change she asked for all week.
On Saturday I went to the reception for ten minutes, long enough to see the place cards with the monogram in the corner. The loop was open at the top. Nobody at the table noticed, and I did not tell them.
