Black and grey rose tattoo on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a raised hand wearing stacked metal bracelets, with white high-top sneakers with black soles and gold lace hardware beside it. A rose tattoo is partly visible on the forearm, rendered in black and grey with soft shading across the petals. The close, angled composition places the tattoo at the lower left edge of the frame, and only part of the design is shown.

Dear Nell,

The rain came in off the river at seven and has not let up, so the awning over my barrow sags like a wet sail and every bucket of stock stands in its own puddle. Nobody buys flowers in weather like this. They buy tinned soup and umbrellas. I have spent the morning rearranging the same three bunches of sweet peas and wondering whether you were right, that I should have stayed at the nursery in Hanwell.

Yesterday a woman came by and asked whether I had any roses that were not red. I said I had one, a single bloom my father grafted before he died, the petals so dark they go nearly black at the edges and grey where the light gets into them. She said that was the one she wanted, then did not take it. She stood there so long the drip off my awning ran down the back of her collar, and then she said she was only looking, the way people do at a grave they cannot yet bring themselves to visit.

I have kept the rose in a jar on the counter. This morning it had opened another inch, which seems mad in this cold, and I stood watching it like a fool until a boy knocked his coffee over my ledger.

I am going to leave it on the stall tomorrow, unpriced, with a card that says take it. If she comes back she will know what to do. If she does not, somebody will find it in the rain and wonder why a man gave away the only thing worth keeping.

Love, Tom
