The laces had to be tied before the bells, Ada's grandmother always said, or the road would untie you on the way to the church. So on the morning of the wedding the whole lane stood on its doorsteps while Ada knelt on the wet cobbles with a pair of soft grey shoes her aunt had knitted from wool the colour of rain. The shoes were small and fine, and the aunt had sewn a ridge along each sole like the ribs of a shell, so that no one could say they were not made with care.

The rose on the lid of the wedding chest had been painted by Tom the joiner the winter before, when the dye-seller said there was no red left in the valley. He had worked it up from ash and soot and a little milk, and it came out grey, the petals shaded dark at the edges and pale where the light would fall. Ada's mother had said it looked like a rose someone was remembering. Ada had said nothing, because she had been waiting for the red all year.

The lace snapped twice. The third time, the old widow from the mill house came down the lane with a length of grey thread pulled from her own hem and tied it in, one loop and one loop, without looking at her hands. The bells began. Ada stood up, and the road under her feet was quiet. When they reached the church gate, the chest in the cart behind them had caught the low sun, and the rose on its lid had gone the faintest pink at the centre, the way a cheek does when someone says a kind thing.
