Rose with stem on a finger

Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A rose in full bloom sits near the top of the finger, with a long stem curving down the finger to a small closed bud at the base. Soft shading gives the petals depth, while fine lines define the leaves and small swirling tendrils along the stem. The tattoo is in black and grey against a dark background, with the finger shown in sharp focus and the rest of the hand softly blurred.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm will tell you the cloister rose has never been cut for the wrong reason, and you should believe him, because he is the one who sweeps up what falls. It is the oldest bush at Saint Osric's, trained up the south wall of the infirmary garth, and by the rule of the house only the abbot may take a bloom, and only for the altar on the feast of the translation. Everyone else waits for the rose to open on its own and let go.

So when young Jerome came to you in the second week of Lent with his face wet and a pair of kitchen shears up his sleeve, you did not ask what he meant to do with them. You took them from him the way you would lift a hot pan from a boy's hands, and walked him down the worn steps to the potting shed, where the light came through the cracked glass in grey bars.

He told you it was for his mother, who had written to say she would not be coming to see him take his vows. He had watched the bud at the foot of the stem for three weeks and thought it was the only thing in the valley that had not yet decided to leave. You sat on an upturned crate and listened to the bees knocking at the window, and you did not mention the rule. You told him instead about your own first winter here, and the mornings you counted the stems you were not allowed to touch.

In the morning the bud was still closed. The shears hung back on their nail, and someone had bound the long stem to the trellis with a strip of linen so it would not fall in the night. Anselm stood beside you in the wet grass and studied it for a long time, then looked at you, and said nothing at all, which from him is a blessing.
