Rose with stem on the neck behind the ear
Botanical · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded black and grey rose in full bloom sits on the side of the neck, just below and behind the ear, with two small buds and leaves along a thin stem that curves down towards the collarbone. The petals are rendered with soft grey shading and darker accents, while the stem and leaves use fine, clean linework. The photograph is taken in close, black and white framing that focuses on the tattoo and the ear.

You have the cutting wrapped in a damp tea towel on the passenger seat, and every mile of Route 66 the towel dries a little and you wet it again from the thermos. The nursery woman in Needles had shrugged when you asked for a black rose. "Nothing's black, love. Dark red if you're lucky, and it'll sulk." You bought the dark one anyway, because it was the only thing in the shop that looked like it had been through something.

The road is empty except for heat shimmer and a lorry that passes so close the cab rocks. Twenty miles past Amboy a woman is walking the shoulder with a jerrycan, and you slow without deciding to. She is seventy if she is a day, hat tied on with a headscarf, and she says her Buick gave up at dawn and she has been walking since. You give her the water. She looks at the tea towel and says roses don't travel well. "Neither do we," she says, and climbs in.
At the old motel, the pool is a cracked bowl with a dead palm lying in it. She points at the courtyard, where a concrete planter has split straight down the middle. You kneel and dig with the tyre iron, and the soil underneath is cool and damp in a way nothing else out here is. You set the cutting in, press the earth round its stem, and pour the last of the water slowly so it doesn't run off.
Three weeks later a postcard arrives at the nursery with no name on it, only a photograph of the split planter and one open bloom, dark as wine, with a bud beside it waiting its turn. On the back, in pencil, someone has written: It drank everything you gave it, and then it asked for more.
