Small crescent moon tattoo behind the ear

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows a person seen from behind, with dark hair pulled back to reveal the side of the neck and ear. A small, solid black crescent moon sits on the skin just behind the ear, with simple edges and no shading. The ink is the only colour in the frame, set against pale skin and a thin dark cord necklace, with the composition focused on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the last week of August the wasps had found the windfalls before anyone else, and Grandad said the only sensible hour for the Bramleys was after dark, when the insects had gone sleepy in the long grass. So you went out with the paraffin lamp hooked on your wrist and a hessian sack over one shoulder, and the orchard smelled of cider and crushed leaves. The moon was only a paring, thin as a fingernail, hanging low over the hedge at the bottom of the slope.

Grandad had taught you that a young moon was a bit of a fibber, that the rest of it was still there if you looked hard enough, the dark part held up by the old light. You didn't believe him, but you liked the saying. You worked along the rows, reaching into the branches for fruit that gave under your thumb, and the lamp threw your shadow long across the trunks. Somewhere past the third row you lost one of the little brass earrings your sister had bought at the Saturday market, the star-shaped one, and spent ten minutes on your knees in the wet grass feeling for it.

When you finally stood up the sack was heavy, your fingers were sticky, and the lamp had gone yellow behind its glass. The earring was caught against a root, glinting like something that had decided to stay. You hooked it back through your ear, and the cold brass made you laugh out loud in the empty orchard. Above the hedge the moon hadn't moved, still thin and certain, and it watched you haul the sack up the hill towards the lit kitchen window.
