Rose wrapped around a knife

Fine line · Colour · Flash

The design shows a rose in bloom at the upper left, with its stem and leaves curling down across a knife with a handle at the lower left and a blade rising to the upper right. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the rose petals are drawn with fine interior lines. The subject is isolated on a plain white background in a single shade of red.

Dear Tomasz,

The chef finally let me have the old boning knife, the one with the handle wrapped in red tape gone soft as liver. He said I could keep it if I stopped cutting the thumb of my left hand every Friday. I have not yet managed the second part. But I have been sharpening it on the back step after close, under the bulb that buzzes like a trapped wasp, and the rose I planted by the bins has started to climb the rail beside me.

Nobody thought it would take. It is a cutting from the bush Mrs Okafor kept behind the launderette on Bolton Road, and she gave it to me in a yoghurt pot wrapped in newspaper, saying the soil behind a restaurant was made of grease and grievance and roses hated both. Still it flowered. Two buds the first week, then a fat pink thing that opened at three in the morning while the extractor fans rattled above it. Each morning I find the stem has reached a little further along the blade of the knife I left leaning against the wall.

Last night the sous chef came out for a cigarette and laughed at me, saying I was training a plant to murder the cutlery. I told him thorns are only a rose's way of asking to be respected. He did not understand, but he stood there and let the smoke drift up past the lamp until the petals caught the light, and for once nobody shouted for anyone.

When you visit at Christmas, bring the good whetstone from Dad's shed. I want you to see what the knife looks like with the stem wound round it. I think I will leave it there.

Love, Eli
