Black and grey realism tattoo of two roses and a dagger on a woman's upper back and shoulder blade.

Roses and dagger on upper back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two shaded roses and a dagger with an ornate hilt are tattooed across the upper back and over the shoulder blade, with leaves and a stem running down toward the spine. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, giving the petals and blade depth and a realistic finish. The photo is taken from behind, showing only the back and shoulder against a neutral indoor background.

Hold the lamp closer, Tomas, and mind the rope, because this is the part the purser never believes. The Marigold was three weeks out of Valparaiso when Ines the cook found the roses in the flour barrel: two of them, cut clean and wrapped in oilcloth, and beneath them a dagger with a hilt worked like a cage of silver wire.

Nobody aboard knew whose they were. Ines swore a dead carpenter had left them as a warning, and the bosun swore a woman in Bristol had posted them to the wrong ship. Captain Hale only turned the dagger over in his hands and said nothing for the length of a watch, which was the first time any of us had seen him lost for words.

On the fortieth night he called me to the stern and pressed the blade into my palm. 'Take it back to whoever cut these,' he said, 'and tell them the sea has kept its half of the bargain.' I asked him what bargain. He laughed the way men laugh when they have decided to be honest and dislike the taste of it. 'Every rose has a thorn, boy. Every thorn has a hand that set it there.'

We raised the Scillies in a grey March dawn, and I went ashore with the dagger wrapped in my shirt. The shop by the quay had a rose painted on its window and a woman behind the counter who saw the blade and went very still. She unwrapped the roses, pressed one petal flat with her thumb, and asked me, quite gently, whether the captain had come home. I told her he had gone down with the Marigold in the autumn. She nodded, untied her apron, and reached for the green thread.
