The road out past Calder Wells ran so straight that a man could watch his own dust for an hour before it settled. Hanne Virr kept the petrol pump at the edge of town, and behind it she kept a crate of roses that had been cut for funerals. The salt wind dried them to paper. She pressed the good ones flat between cardboard and sold them for a penny to children who wanted something to take to school.

One April a stranger walked in from the west with a sack over his shoulder and a folded picture of a man's face. The face had the look of someone about to speak and thinking better of it. He asked whether anyone had seen him. Hanne held the picture under the strip light for a long time before she answered. That was her brother, she said. He had walked this road in 1931 and never reached the next town, and the only thing that came back was a grey crow that perched on the pump and would not be shooed.

The stranger looked up at the pump. The crow was there, its feet gripping the rusted cap, its eye on the crate. He took a flat rose from the crate, laid it on the face in the picture, and set both on the counter. The crow dropped from the pump, took the paper rose in its beak, and flew east toward the hills without a sound.

Hanne did not stop him when he left. By morning the crate was full of fresh roses, though nothing had been cut, and the road ran on west carrying nothing but dust.
