Her grandson Tobin came home one night from the cloth market with ink on his cuffs and a question. He had found the old sheets folded inside a tea caddy, and every one held the same script running down in neat, leaning strokes, each line a little fainter than the last. Beneath the final verse was a space the width of a palm, and nothing written in it.
She didn't answer him straight. She took the brush, dipped it, and asked him to hold the lamp steady. The lines, she said, were not a prayer or a spell. They were the names of people she had forgiven, and she had only ever written them down so she would not have to carry them in her head. The lotus on the bank had come up out of the silt the year she stopped being angry, and it opened only in the dark.
Tobin left the blank space empty. He carried the sheet down to the lock at midnight, and by the light of the one lamp he saw a pale bloom turning on the black water, its petals open like the first line of a letter that had not yet been answered.
