Roses and revolver on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

Two large red roses frame an ornate revolver with engraved silver detailing, set diagonally across the thigh. The roses are rendered with soft shading and highlights, while the revolver and leaves are shaded in greys to give a three-dimensional effect. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a blurred indoor background.

The gun came to Harrow's Ford in a cardboard box the week my brother Eddie went missing, and nobody in town would say who sent it. Ma kept it wrapped in her good tea towel on the top shelf of the dresser, the silver scrollwork catching the lamplight whenever she reached past it for the sugar. I told her it was a prop from the picture house. She didn't laugh.

The roses came up in the front garden that spring, big red heads the size of a child's fist, and Ma swore they'd never bloomed before. She cut two and laid them on the kitchen table beside the box like an offering, and by Sunday the petals had gone soft and dark at the edges. Mrs Pruitt from next door said a rose that dark meant somebody was owed something. I stopped listening to Mrs Pruitt after that.

I took the revolver down on the Thursday, when the rain had washed the lane clean and the sheriff's car was parked outside the Wheatsheaf. Its weight surprised me. I walked to the ford with it in my coat pocket, past the bridge where Eddie used to fish for trout he never caught, and I dropped it into the slow brown water. The ripples spread out in rings, and a pair of leaves came loose from the bank and turned slowly after it.

Eddie walked up the lane at dusk, whistling, his hat in his hand. He didn't ask where the gun was. He just pressed a red rose into my palm and said, that's a fair trade, Ruthie, and went in to see Ma.
