Pink bow and pistol on the lower abdomen

Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo

A pistol with a pink bow tied around its top, drawn with bold dark outlines and grey shading on the metal and grip. The grip has a small ornamental pattern and a heart-like motif, and the bow is shaded in pink with lighter highlights. The tattoo sits centrally on the lower abdomen, angled diagonally, with a pink garment visible at the bottom of the frame.

Sit closer, because the rain on the tarpaulins makes me shout and I haven't the lungs for it anymore. You want to hear about the pistol. Everybody on the Thursday stalls wants to hear about the pistol, so fine, you can have it.

Mrs Odile Brennan bought it off a dead man's cousin at Hereford mart, wrapped in a hair ribbon the colour of boiled sweets. Nobody in that county could tell her what it was for. The cousin swore it had been his grandmother's, and that the old woman had never used it for anything but holding a garden gate shut. Odile didn't believe a word, and she paid four pounds anyway, because a thing with a ribbon on it has been loved by someone, and that is worth four pounds to anybody who has nothing else to love.

She cleaned the grey metal with vinegar and a toothbrush. She tied a fresh bow from the rain-stained ribbon and fixed it to the grip, where the little ornament had worn down to a whisper. Then she set the thing on a trestle beside the cockle stall and waited for a buyer who would understand it.

A boy came, nine or ten, with a fist full of fifty-pence pieces and a question about whether it fired. Odile told him it did not. It fired nothing but a grin. He bought a bag of pear drops instead and walked off with the bow still caught on his sleeve, and that was the end of the pistol's trading life, though not of the ribbon, which the boy's mother spent a week trying to get out of his jumper.
