Red rose and scrollwork on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large red rose with soft shading and visible petal folds sits on the upper arm and shoulder, framed by grey scrollwork and acanthus-style ornament. The rose is rendered with smooth gradients and highlights, while the scrollwork uses grey shading to give a three-dimensional, carved look. The composition wraps around the arm, with a second red rose partly visible lower down beneath the ornament.

The frost has got into the parlour ceiling again, and by seven the lath shows through like ribs. You stand on the trestle with a bucket of lime putty at your feet and your breath going up in front of you, scraping back the old plaster until the centre rose comes away in one piece. Mrs Ardern at Low Grange wants it back before the family arrives for the christening, and she wants the room warm enough to sit in.

Under the rose there is a second rose, pressed into the lath by someone who ran out of ceiling, and beneath that a line of pencil writing in a hand you cannot read. You work the lime into the acanthus scrolls with a steel tool, the way your uncle taught you, lifting each leaf until it stands proud of the ground and throws its own small shadow. The stove in the corner ticks. Across the yard a tractor starts, dies, and starts again.
By the third day the petals are holding. You grey the hollows with a little charcoal so the carving looks cut from stone, then you lay the red wash over the bloom, soft at the folds, and the room begins to feel like somewhere people might gather. Mrs Ardern climbs the stepladder herself to look, one hand on the doorframe, and says nothing for a long time.
When she comes down she asks what the pencil says. You tell her it is a name, a girl's, and a date from before the war. She nods as if she already knew and says to leave it where it is. You do. Nobody sees it but the rose, which holds the ceiling up just as well with a ghost underneath.
