Roses and skull on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two large pink-red roses resting above a skull, with a faint third bloom and soft shadowing in the background. The skull is rendered in smooth grey shading with red droplets and a black ink splatter at its base. The blended, painterly shading and strong contrast fill the upper thigh, with the design centred on the leg.

She knelt and brushed the soil away with her sleeve. It was a skull, grey as wet slate, older than any grave the parish kept records of. Small red spots had dried across its brow like spilt seed. She left the spade where it lay and carried the best of the blooms to the almshouse in her apron. Dorrit took them without a word and set them in a stone jug on the windowsill. The petals were already darkening at the edges, the way a bruise does, but the scent was sweet enough to fill the room.
In the morning there was a third rose on the sill, tight and red, though Mira had cut nothing but two. Dorrit only nodded at it, as if she had been expecting it all along, and said the wood had a way of making its own arrangements.
